THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS AFTERNOON. HELLO, CLASS OF 2016 ON BEHALF OF OUR OUTSTANDING
FACULTY AND STAFF, I AM HONORED TO STAND BEFORE YOU TO APPLAUD YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND RELAY
OUR PRIDE IN YOU. GETTING TO THIS MILESTONE WAS NOT EASY, BUT YOU PERSISTED, AND HERE
YOU ARE. I AM SURE YOU WOULD ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU WOULD NOT REACH THIS MILESTONE ON YOUR
OWN. GRADUATES, PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE INDIVIDUALS HERE IN ATTENDANCE WHO SUPPORTED
YOU ON THIS JOURNEY WITH A ROUND OF APPLAUSE. [APPLAUSE] THERE ARE OTHER SUPPORTERS WHOSE
NAMES YOU MAY NOT KNOW, SUCH AS OUR ALUMNI WHO HAVE INVESTED IN FUTURE STUDENTS THROUGH
SCHOLARSHIPS AND GIFTS. WE HOPE THAT YOU TOO WILL ONE DAY DECIDE TO PAY IT FORWARD. AS
YOU MOVE INTO THE NEXT PHASE OF YOUR LIFE’S JOURNEY, LET ME SHARE SEVERAL ESSENTIAL LESSONS
THAT I HAVE LEARNED. THE FIRST IS TO HOLD HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR YOURSELF . AS HUMANS,
WE RESPOND TO EXPECTATIONS. IF YOU HAVE LOW EXPECTATIONS, YOU WILL BEHAVE IN WAYS THAT
DON’T MATTER. SET THE BAR HIGH, AND EXERCISE THE DISCIPLINE THAT IS NEEDED TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS.
THE SECOND IS, TAKE ACTION. DON’T LET THE FEAR OF FAILURE IN HIT YOU — INHIBIT YOU.
UNLESS ACTIONS ARE TAKEN IN THE DIRECTION OF YOUR EXPECTATIONS, YOU WILL NOT BE SUCCESSFUL.
THE THIRD IS PERSISTENCE . SUCCESS ISN’T ALWAYS EASY OR A GUARANTEE. KNOW WITH EVERY FAILURE
THERE ARE LESSONS. LEARN FROM THEM AND MOVE FORWARD. THE FOURTH IS MAINTAINING OPTIONS.
ACHIEVING A DEGREE OPENS UP POSSIBILITY. LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO FURTHER YOUR GROWTH AND
ADAPT TO THE CHANGES THAT WILL OCCUR DURING YOUR LIFETIME. FINALLY, DISCOVER YOUR PURPOSE.
WHY ARE YOU HERE? YOUR TALENTS AND GIFTS ARE STILL DEVELOPING. BE OPEN TO NEW EXPERIENCES
AND PURSUE AREAS THAT ALIGN WITH YOUR CURIOSITY AND YOUR PASSION. SOME OF YOU MAY ALREADY
KNOW OR HAVE A CLEAR PATH FORWARD. FOR OTHERS, IT MAY TAKE LONGER. RECOGNIZE THAT YOU ARE
ALWAYS IN THE ACT OF CREATING AND CHOOSING. SEEK TO DISCOVER AND LET UNFOLD THE GREATNESS
THAT LIES WITHIN EACH OF YOU. BE BOLD IN YOUR PURSUITS. STRIVE TO BE YOUR BEST AUTHENTIC
SELF. IN CLOSING, I WOULD LIKE TO READ PASSAGES FROM A PIECE WRITTEN BY DENNIS KIMBRELL. MAY
YOU DEVELOP A BURNING DESIRE THAT IS REQUIRED OF ALL ACHIEVEMENTS. MAY YOU STAND UP FOR
THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS AGAINST THE UNDESIRABLE INFLUENCE AND THREATS OF ENEMIES. MAY YOU
SAVE YOUR MONEY SO YOU CAN PAY YOUR WAY IN THE WORLD, AND YES, BE GENEROUS TO THOSE IN
NEED. MAY YOU FORGIVE AND FORGET THOSE WHO MAY HAVE HARMED YOU. MAY YOU ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITIES
FOR THE SUCCESSES, AS WELL AS THE FAILURES COME IN YOUR LIFE. MAY YOU KNOW THAT THE GREATEST
CHALLENGE IS UNDERSTANDING. THE GREATEST MISTAKE IS CONFORMITY. THE GREATEST STRENGTH IS FAITH.
THE GREATEST WEAKNESS IS PRIDE. THE GREATEST DAY IS TODAY. THE GREATEST WORD IS THANKS.
THE GREATEST AMONG US IS WHOEVER SERVES. THE GREATEST MESSAGE IS HOPE. THE GREATEST OF
THESE IS LOVE AND EMPATHY. CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2016 WE ARE SO VERY PROUD OF YOU.

RIGOROUS PROCESS AND MUST MEET THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE IN THEIR FIELD. IT
IS WITH GREAT PRESSURE TO ANNOUNCE — PLEASURE TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE 2016 PROVOST AWARD FOR
EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE GOES TO DR. JEFFREY NEAL, PROFESSOR OF PSYCHOLOGY IN THE COLLEGE
OF LETTERS, ARTS, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES. [APPLAUSE] DR. NEIL WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE MASTER’S
PROGRAM IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY. HE SERVED AS CHAIR OF THE REAPPOINTMENT 10 YOUR
AND PROMOTION COMMITTEE AND ON VARIOUS FACULTY SEARCH COMMITTEES. DR. NEAL ALSO MENTORS JUNIOR
FACULTY AND VOLUNTEERS COUNTLESS HOURS IN SUPERVISING THEM. AS A JUNIOR FACULTY MEMBER
NOTES, ALMOST AS SOON AS I COMPLETED MY WORK TO BECOME A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST, DR. NEIL
BEGAN SUPERVISING A NEW JUNIOR COLLEAGUE. THIS IS A TESTAMENT TO HIS VETOES — ETHOS
OF LIFTING UP THE NEXT GENERATION OF PSYCHOLOGISTS. DR. NEAL ALSO SERVES ON NUMEROUS BOARDS IN
HIS FIELD, INCLUDING THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION, AND IS A MENTOR FOR THE MINORITY
FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM . HE HAS BEEN ACTIVELY ENGAGED WITH THE ASIAN AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL
ASSOCIATION. PROFESSOR NEAL TIRELESSLY WORKS FOR THE EQUITABLE AND UNBIASED TREATMENT OF
ASIAN-AMERICANS IN THE MEDIA THROUGH HIS WORK WITH MEDIA ACTION NETWORK FOR ASIAN-AMERICANS
SINCE 2004, JUST TO NAME A FEW. IT’S AN HONOR AND A PRIVILEGE TO INTRODUCE TO YOU THE 2016
PROVOST AWARD WINNER FOR EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE, PROFESSOR JEFFREY NEAL. CONGRATULATIONS.>>THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]>>THANK YOU, PROVOST. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK
THE SELECTION COMMITTEE FOR THEIR WORK. I KNOW THAT WHILE IT IS FUN TO BE ABLE TO AWARD
YOUR COLLEAGUES , AWARDING SOME, MEANING NOT BEING ABLE TO AWARD OTHERS, AND QUITE OFTEN,
THE DECISIONS CAN BE DIFFICULT. AS FOR MY AWARD FOR SERVICE, I BLAME MY MOTHER WHO IS
SITTING RIGHT OVER HERE. MY MOTHER EPITOMIZE THE PHRASE, IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE, ASK
A BUSY PERSON. WHEN I WAS YOUNG, SHE WAS ACTIVE IN THE PTA, OUR CHURCH, AND TAKING MY SIBLINGS
AND ME TO VARIOUS EVENTS. SHE EVEN BECAME THE DEN MOTHER WHEN I WAS A CUB SCOUT. WHEN
SHE WAS DOING VARIOUS ACTIVITIES IN THE JAPANESE-AMERICAN COMMUNITY WHEN I WAS THREE AND FOUR, I FOLLOWED
HER AROUND. MY COMMUNITY NICKNAME WAS MY MOTHER’S SHADOW. I LEARNED FROM THE BEST. FINALLY,
I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I AM BENEFITING FROM SEXISM. WOMEN ARE OFTEN ASKED TO DO A
LOT OF SERVICE, AND I KIND OF STICK OUT IN MY DEPARTMENT. IN FACT, MY FEMALE COLLEAGUES
HAVE NAMED ME AN HONORARY WOMAN BECAUSE OF THE ACTIVITIES IN WHICH I AM INVOLVED. [APPLAUSE]
[CHEERING] I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME OF MY FEMALE COLLEAGUES TO RECEIVE THIS AWARD,
AS ONE OF THEM ACTUALLY HAS PROCEEDED ME. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO IS ACKNOWLEDGE THAT,
LIKE ALL THE REST OF YOU, I WAS AWAKENED THIS MORNING TO THE HORRIBLE NEWS OF THE SHOOTINGS
IN FLORIDA , AND PERHAPS MY NEXT AREA OF SERVICE WILL BE TO TRY TO ELIMINATE GUN VIOLENCE IN
THIS COUNTRY. [APPLAUSE]>>THANK YOU, DOCTOR. IT’S DIFFICULTTO MAKE
IT THROUGH COLLEGE WITHOUT THE HELP>OF A GOOD FACULTY ADVISOR. WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN
THIS COLLEGE ON HAVING EXCELLENT FACULTY ADVISORS. PLEASE JOIN ME IN ACKNOWLEDGING THE FACULTY

OVERCOME THE ODDS. YES, YOU HAVE GRADUATED, BUT IN THE WORDS OF ONE OF THE WORLDS GREATEST

YOU THERE PERMANENTLY IF YOU LET IT. IF YOU LET IT. IF THERE’S ONE THING I KNOW ABOUT
