Dr Duncan Ross – Dean of Graduate Studies – College of Social Sciences

Hi so I’m Duncan Ross I’m the Dean of
Graduate Studies in the College of Social Sciences the college graduate
school’s main vision is that we want to support those wonderful students who
come to us with great ideas and ensure that they have a great experience while
they’re here in doing so I think we also want to support supervisors we want to
support our colleagues across the college to make sure that they know
where they can come to for help support guidance and advice in meeting the
challenges that students bring with them so we all know that doing a PhD has
changed significantly in the last number of years certainly since I did mine
there’s a lot more requirements around training there’s requirements around
personal and professional development that we expect our students to engage in
and the Graduate School provides a lot of that and ensures that students can
engage with it smoothly can engage with that effectively and achieve what it is
that they’ve come to achieve which is produce a great piece of work but in the
process ensure that they become the rounded professionals who can go on to
work either in academia or in a whole range of other places by the time
they’re done so my commitment as Dean of the Graduate School is to provide
that support to students to provide the support to you as academics and as
colleagues and to make sure that our students complete more effectively
complete more quickly because they’re having a much better experience than
they might have had otherwise
