‘Exquisite Creatures’: Life stands still at OMSI

WASHINGTON. JENNIFER: BUGS, SPIDERS, AND SNAKES, THEY’RE CREATURES THAT MANY OF US WOULD CONSIDER CREEPY CRAWLIES, BUT A SALEM ARTIST SEES THEM AS POTENTIAL WORKS OF ART. DAN: HIS VISION COMES TO LIFE, STARTING TOMORROW AT OMSI, WITH THE NEW EXHIBIT EXQUISITE CREATURES. NEW AT 4:30 TONIGHT, LISA BALICK TAKES US INSIDE FOR A SNEAK, OR SHOULD WE SAY, “SNAKE PREVIEW?” I WAS AN OMSI KID. NOW TO COME BACK AND EXHIBIT HERE IS FABULOUS. LISA: CHRISTOPHER MARLEY CREATES ARTWORK USING WHAT HE CALLS ARTIFACTS OF NATURE, INSECTS, BUGS, BEETLES, SNAKES AND OTHER CREATURES. I HATED INSECTS GROWING UP. LISA: BUT WHEN MARLEY STARTED TRAVELING IN HIS 20’S INSTEAD OF TAKING PHOTOS, HE COLLECTED BUGS AS SOUVENIRS. I WAS AN ARTIST AND A NATURALIST, REALLY, FROM MY EARLIEST MEMORIES. AND THEN IT ALL STARTED TO COME TOGETHER WHEN I WAS TRAVELING ALL AROUND THE WORLD IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. IT GAVE ME ACCESS TO ENVIRONMENTS ALL OVER THE PLANET AND I JUST WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT JUMPING OUT INTO THE JUNGLE WHEN I COULD AND DISCOVER THINGS FOR MYSELF. LISA: HIS HOBBY TURNED INTO HIS PROFESSIONAL CAREER. MANY OF HIS PIECES IN PRIVATE COLLECTIONS. HE WORKS WITH WHAT ARRIVES AT HIS SALEM WAREHOUSE STUDIO AFTER THE CREATURES DIE OF NATURAL CAUSES, MANY COMING FROM ZOOS , BREEDERS, AND COLLECTORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. WE TEACH INDIGENOUS PEOPLE HOW TO COLLECT COMMON INSECTS AND SELL THEM TO COLLECTORS AROUND THE WORLD SO THEY CAN JUSTIFY PRESERVING THAT HABITAT. LISA: FREEZE DRYING THE SPECIMENS, HE THEN STARTS CREATING A MYRIAD OF DESIGNS THAT MAKE YOU MARVEL AT COLORS, DETAILS, SHAPES IN NATURE YOU’D LIKELY NEVER SEE ON YOUR OWN. SOME 500 PIECES ON DISPLAY AT OMSI. MARLEY’S WORKING MORE WITH SCIENCE MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES NOW AROUND THE GLOBE TO REACH A LARGER AUDIENCE, A WAY TO SEND A MESSAGE ABOUT PRESERVING THE PLANET. MY HOPE IS THAT PEOPLE WILL COME HERE AND SEE THINGS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, MANY THINGS THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE, AND THEY WILL KIND OF DEVELOP A NEW LOVE FOR SOME OF THESE CREATURES THAT DON’T GET A LOT OF LOVE IN THE WORLD. DAN: THE EXQUISITE CREATURES EXHIBIT OPENS TOMORROW AT OMSI, AND RUNS THROUGH FEBRUARY 17. ENTRY IS INCLUDED WITH GENERAL ADMISSION TO OMSI. AS LISA WAS TALKING ABOUT, SHE TOOK YOU INSIDE HIS STUDIO A LITTLE EARLIER THIS YEAR. IF YOU WANT TO SEE MORE OF THAT, YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK AT THAT RIGHT NOW ON KOIN.COM. JENNIFER: IT’S A GOOD STORY. THERE’S A LOT.
