Open Letter to the President: Physics Education
Dear Mr. President, Do you know much about physics? I mean, you’re
the President of the United States: a country with five thousand nuclear weapons, birthplace
of the world’s computing and telecommunications industry, home of the first atomic clock and
creator of the global positioning system. But chances are, if you just took regular
American high school physics, you don’t know one iota about the science behind these things
(No offense). That’s because high school physics students across most of America are not required
to learn about pretty much any physical phenomena discovered or explained more recently than
1865. Yes, 1865. That’s the year the civil war ended and well over a decade before Albert
Einstein was even born! You know what can happen in 150 years, Mr.
President? A lot. Velcro, for one. But let me list some useful and important ideas of
the last 150 years of physics that aren’t a required part of most standard US high school
physics courses: Photons. The structure of atoms. The existence
of Antimatter. GPS. Lasers. Transistors. Diodes and LEDs. Quarks. Chaos Theory. Electron Microscopy.
MRI scanning. The Big Bang. Black Holes. Star formation. The fact that gravity bends light.
The fact that the universe is expanding. The Higgs Boson and the weak and strong nuclear
forces and all the rest of quantum mechanics and relativity and the topic of every single
Nobel Prize in Physics since… always. Basically, most of the important stuff. I mean, Mr. President, imagine if history
classes didn’t talk about the abolition of slavery, world wars I or II, the great depression,
the rise of the US as a global superpower, the cold war or the civil rights movement
or heaven forbid the first African American President. Or imagine if biology classes didn’t
talk about DNA, or hormones, or cell reproduction or the modern germ theory of disease or ecology.
Or if geologists didn’t talk about plate tectonics. And computer scientists… well… in 1865
a computer was a person who computed your taxes. Now, if you were lucky enough to have an ambitious
teacher or take Advanced Placement Physics, then you might have learned about some of
Einstein’s discoveries of 1905! Yes! Current events! But learning about how Einstein’s
work helped set the stage for a century of amazing developments in our understanding
of the universe is not a part of the standard curriculum. So why, Mr. President, am I addressing this
letter to you? Well, you appoint the Secretary of Education, for one – and I do believe that
high school physics is somewhat related to education. Now, maybe your education secretary says,
“ancient physics is already hard to teach to high schoolers. And you want us to teach
them modern physics which is even harder?! Students can’t really appreciate the beauty
of modern physics without fancy college level mathematics.” RUBBISH. Ever heard of Carl
Sagan? Richard Feynman? Or Neil deGrasse Tyson? These great men have been 100% committed to
the appreciation and dissemination of the awesomeness of the universe. And we should
be too. How else are we supposed to foster and find our future brilliant innovators,
inventors, and explorers? How can we expect to educate our citizens for the next century
if we don’t teach about the last? And that’s not to say that we should ignore
math, either – on the contrary, math is one of the most beautiful and awesome things in
the universe, especially because it allows us to understand the universe. In particular, the last 150 years have borne
fruit to perhaps the most drastic changes in our understanding of the universe, ever,
and these new ways of thinking and solving problems should be the centerpiece of an education
in physics. Between you and me, Mr. President, I think
we’d better start making physics education more awesome here in the US, otherwise the
next Carl Sagan or Richard Feynman will come from somewhere with more educational foresight
– maybe even, the Internet. Sincerely, A collection of atoms known as Henry ps you’re probably super busy, but if you’d
like to hear about physics education across the Atlantic, I highly recommend heading over
to Brady’s channel, Sixty Symbols, for a perspective from the UK. I bet you’ll enjoy it.
I actually like the way physics is taught here. Newtonian physics governs 99% of what the average person needs for survival in this world. Unless you go into research or a few certain stem disciplines Newtonian physics is all you will need. Students already say algebra is useless, imagine what they would say about quantum mechanics. Plus it's the states responsibility to educate. At least that's what the constitution says… ahem common core…
The part where it says "you" and it's Obama is sad now.
Did he even watch this video ?
We have the same problem in germany
The video from the UK is English and Welsh educations. Scotland has an entirely different system and already teaches quantum Mechanics, special relatively and many other modern concepts across all levels of physics and even chemistry and maths.
What's the name of the name of the backing track on this video? I know its just a bassline but its good to work to
You can hear NDG say his name when Henry says "Neil DeGrasse Tyson"
Laughing here in Australia because this is all in the curriculum and it is dumbed down so much and people still fail because physics teachers don't know how to teach physics in my experience, they just talk for the entire lesson about why physics is so great and all the stuff we will learn in uni is amazing and completely forget to teach what we are meant to be learning.
Come to India, you'll realise how lacklustre education is here.
you sounf like jessie eisenberg and hes my favorite actor, this is why i watch you
we rather keep our gub zipped off this year or we physics lovers might be sued and started being asked for money to build a wall between us and physics. phew
no response from Obama… I wonder why
From what I can tell, the atomic clock was announced first by NBS in USA, but first one actually built and working was by NPL, England in 1955.
Is this for real? Your schools don't teach this stuff?!?!
Jesus Christ, i'm from a second world country and they teach us all of this stuff in high school…
They are now trying to introduce Creation bullshit into science classes. No wonder the U.S. are so far behind nowadays.
Imagine doing this to Trump. Hi Mr President. I know you think Climate Change and other well confirmed science is bullshit but can you please improve science education after you stop bitching on Twitter? Thanks.
Feels good that a lot of these things are taught in India.
"Students can't fully understand modern level of physics!" * says, as I a 12-year-old, groan *
oh crap. and now you poor bastards have trump. And I don't think he can even read. good luck
The Big bang is OBVIOUS
The president is TRUMP, not Obama
And now the US has a president that denies global warming and appointed a christian fundamentalist school privatiser as the head of education.
Lol imagine this video being made now
"Mr president do you know anything?"
It's sad that I've learned more physics in my Chemistry class than most of the rest of American high schools.
In england we learn all of that stuff in gcse level
good luck trying to teach complex physics to a bunch of high school retards
You need to know the foundations of physics before you can learn about the more advanced stuff in physics. Also how stupid is the average person? Half are more stupid than that. I'm a nerd and I like physics, but I don't get 100% in every test. And some of the stuff you mention is learnt at A level, and a few things even at GCSE. The physics learnt today is far too advanced for the average pre university student to learn in too much detail. And if you are interested, then there's nothing stopping anyone going on the Wikipedia page and learning general relativity. School gives you the foundation, but you can go and learn more if you want, for example by going to university
E=mc2
LMAO Looks like this bad boy needs a Trump "upgrade"
Wait,
So you're telling me that school in the US is basically useless?
Can we all just be thankful the internet exist, without it learning about modern topics in the science world would be very difficult. The internet can answer almost any question you type into, not only that it makes you want to learn more, have you ever gone to google and asked it a question and then once you got your answer from a reliable source, then see another question just as profound and interesting, you click and then the cycle repeats, now that to me is the curiosity and mind of a scientist.
So I knew about everything he listed as the "not part of the standard curriculum" part of physics and was like, "wait, now that i think about it, i didn't learn any of that from school. thank you internet"
I am 11
AND I AM SMART ENOUGH TO APPRECIATE THESE COMPLEX
STUDIES
FUDGE THE HIGH SCHOOLERS WHO ONLY CARE ABOUT BEING COOL
Considering high school technically only has 1 year to teach Physics, which can cover Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Optics, Waves and even Relativity, that's pretty impressive. We just need to offer multiple year physics, starting with 7th and 8th grade if we have to. Remove those mandatory long History and English classes where the teachers basically babysit students and no one ever remembers any of those things. Let the students pick based on their interest.
3:18 did you seriously put reddit on there? reddit is filled with a lot of ignorant teens, im not sure if reddit has much intellectual value.. well then again.. it might have for 12 year olds
Might as well ask for the keys to Fort Knox and world peace with that! LOL
My "Science" teachers from K to F.U. were all Young Earth Creationists.
Aaaaaaaaaaand now trump is the president
funny to see that. Germanys school system is the same sht. Don't know how it is in the US but here in germany, u learn something, try to get it in your brain, write a test about that and then forget all to learn some other boring sht… most of my knowledge comes from the internet, also most of my english so im sorry if this isnt perfect english ^^.
All i know about black holes, physics, spacetime, all the laws, chemistry, and quantum i learned on youtube.
Pls don't point out my name because i am also a meme addict.
Can you replace Obama with Trump now? ( I would be impressed if he succeeded)
PREACH
And now Donald Trump is the president.
Glad to live in Germany fuckers lol
Oh my God, I knew American education was broken but that's actually really bad.
Wonder what Trump knows about physics…
I love this channel.
Well from my experiences most high school students are NOT prepared in basic maths nor studying skills to tackle even a watered down one year course! Remember that teachers are rated by pseudoscience and garbage statistics of end of course exams ,so it's teach to the test which is always a struggle!
Corporations can always find the educated workforce by importing them! That is our secret weapon , the H1B visa ! Don't need to spent our money to educate workers just import them!!
You videos are way better than sixty symbols btw
am from ALGERIA , and here we learn about this stuff in the 11th grad.
.
.
.
.
.
.
we do never.
now you got trump, i quess that wont happen for the next years
The same problem is with India right now
its sad that my college physics courses didn't really even touch up on any of this stuff, like at all. i had more interesting conversations with physics degree students who learned this stuff in either specialized courses or on their own rather than the two physics courses I had to take- they were in all honesty a waste of time and really made me not like the subject but that has more to do with how the class was taught than the content.
though i have to add in, it isn't just physics class that needs to be updated and made relevant, most courses in school (at least my schools) have always been lack luster in their lessons and usually focus on off topic concepts that provide no foundational backing as to why they are being taught
Ie as an example for my thoughts on how school should be structured, a math courses should work off of what science courses explain, and history course explain further in the backing of why those previous concepts are important.
Things like English/Writing and language courses imo are kind of self explanatory in why they are usefully but rarely have i ever had courses that I walked away from feeling like it benefited me worth the time spent there…. especially the money it cost.
I have no idea why this turned into a rant but I do have to agree with the notion that you have immensely more to gain from the internet (assuming you got the will for it) than what current schools provide. At least for here in the US.
Don't you need to start learning the basic stuff, about momentum, energy, motion, and waves, before you can start learning quantum mechanics? We learn newer biology because the subject is younger (basic understandings of evolution, germ theory, and the molecular nature of life did not emerge until the 19th century.), but we still start by learning about the insights of Darwin and Mendel even in college (I am a college student). In college level organic chemistry we mostly learn about reactions that have been understood for years. You need to learn the basic stuff if you want to really LEARN the new stuff. This holds for all fields. While Sagan or Tyson or whomever may be able to explain complex subjects to the layperson in an interesting way, and I don't doubt that this is valuable work, you aren't really understanding the math or basic first principles reasons why these things are true.
I'm 16 and doing A level physics in the UK and I'm glad to hear that pretty much everything you listed is in our curriculum
This guy's right. If we're gonna teach useless information then we might as well make it interesting useless information.
I am proud to be indian and have in depth study of calculus for physics at 11th grade level
trump sure doesn't. :/
Remember when this was problem
I’d like to see you send this to Trump now. You’d get a more coherent response from an orangutan.
they should make physics more fun to learn about.
science and math are really interesting
but the way that they teach it at school, it just bores me out
Hold on . You can´t teach modern physics to highschool students because it requires a high level of advanced math (calculus, Linear Algebra, Analysis) to understand that. Teaching modern physics without the requiered advanced college math… I dont know
Oh no! Physics will be even worse now because of someone ! I don't want to say his name, but it contains a Mickey Mouse character, and something a lot like Trum- I meant trunk. Why this guy, why???!!!!
Sure we don't teach modern topics, but we teach our modern understanding of topics. You can expect to teach topics that we don't fully understand on a large scale, that's not how science works.
Many of those topics "not covered" by the standards of high school physics courses are covered in other classes. In chemistry, we cover the photon and the quantum mechanical model of atoms. In "Geoscience" we cover the big bang and cosmic background radiation. To name a few.
Secretary of Education? Ha, ha, ha, ha. We're fucked. It was nice to have a president that actually picked people based on merit as opposed to one who seemingly picks them based on how unqualified they are.
Trump
Well, we they may not teach that, but they do teach that only 6 people died in the Boston Massacre. They only called it a massacre in order to spark support for the revolution against the British.
this is why gorvernment should not regulate education if there was a free market of education many forms of schools would appear and the parents could choose what is more inportant for there kids to learn not some polititian in washington
I have learned more on youtube than schools so why do we need schoold go youtube
me- 3:16
Privatize High Schools, they will slowly improve, and have universities make the syllabus for high schools…
3:03 General Relatmty and Special Relatmty?
Very accurate, I have had to learn much of relativity and particle physics on my own because our schools avoid those topics
No politician knows any physics. Any self-respecting scientist would never run for office
Now Donald Trump
Back when we actually had a respectable president…
I want to do Integrated PHD
in US there is the better education of PhD
Actually, here in Romania,an eastern european country we do have basicly everything you mentioned early, like the first chapter is about Special relativity…
I’m so glad I was born in this generation and I have access to almost all knowledge known to man.
(I’m 15 btw)
Thia video is full bullshit. Ap physics C covers most of this.
I'm lucky I just recently "learned" about the big bang in school. I new all of the material just from watching youtube videos. It wasn't as cool though.
couldn't be more accurate.
The reason why Newtonian physics looks primitive but took a genius like Newton to formulate is because Newton started from scratch, (people didn't even know that the earth was an oblate spheroid back then etc). if kids hit the ground running, 16 year olds equipped with quantum mechanics, relativity, + much more, while they still have plasticity, imagine the scientific renaissance that will follow. however, if kids only learn classical mechanics, then get hit with "overwhelming lorenz transformationy stuff" and the "mind bending revolutionary stuff" too late, the progression of physics would be slowed down
thank goodness YouTube exists, it is a lifeline. it's just sad that countless people haven't discovered this lifeline. countless people could've benefited from channels like this.
They teach most of this uk schools
Fun Face: My history courses have rarely even gotten even part way through the 20th century.
So do American High school last years don't even learn calculus to use in physics??
My elementary school's library had books delving into quantum mechanics.
Yes, it's American.
I don't think he has much time to watch this video.
THIS IS INDEED THE PROBLEM OF WHOLE EARTH
Our education system tells student- memorise the answers and score good marks in exam.
And then the future of child spoils.
PEACE OUT
0:35 THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN
Velcro, for one.
I rather learn it from your channel. School will make me hate it.
Please president don't do this we already have sooooooo much to study
we were so innocent back then
I hope someone notices the ion propelled invention on my website. Relatively few people seem to care about it, even though it can lift its power supply against earth's gravity! It can therefore accelerate at greater than one G for long periods of time, and optionally carry a very small propellant tank!…..
Here trying to find Obama
How could you have expected Obama to change physics education if he couldn’t even control our economy? Trump 2020!
Why would we need proper physics education when we have you, Mr. Henry MinutePhysics?
I really hate to break this to you, but there are two career groups that are impossibly stupid. And one of those is teachers. I'm serious. Students don't learn this stuff because most teachers can't teach it. And as they say in West Virginia, "Ya all can't fix stupid". And by the way, for those astronomers out there, gravity is NOT the dominate force in the universe. Over 100 years down the shit hole. And that's only the beginning of your woes.
Our physics book is the worst…. There are several mistakes but the most hilarious one goes like this ' a crown's weight is 10kg and in water its weight is 9.4kg…..'
There are many mistakes in the examples and they don't even explain anything…… They didn't even give all the formulas needed to do the maths….. We have to do it on our own
