Science News and Research

one of the ways that science research
and news is different from humanities and Social Sciences is that science is
news when you hear about something big like cancer being cured in the news on
NPR New York Times Wall Street Journal Boston Globe Fox CNN MSNBC it’s been
reported because a new research article has been published about it they haven’t
made the immediate discovery they’ve just published something about it the
difference between a news article versus a research article when it comes to
student research is that for one the science news article is not written by a
science expert it’s written by a reporter they have no obligation to cite
their sources the way we make you and the way research articles cite their
sources and they have no obligation to provide you access to the data they use
to get their information so you’ll often find that they not only don’t cite the
article but they don’t even mention the articles they got them from they might
on the other hand mention an author of a book or a researcher by name and they do
give you ideas on what to search for yourself so there are three key ways
that you can turn a news article into the research that was
used to write the article at hand first you want to look for any authors that
are mentioned in the news article they will often talk directly to subject
experts and they’ll mention those experts by name and often where they’re
affiliated you can take those authors search them in our databases and find
what those authors have written to use for your research they will often they
often do actually mention sophistical sources books any articles and you can
then go find those by searching for the title in a database or in a catalog of
books or simply linking to the link that they might offer you and finally if they
offer none of that look for those keywords to find any research on those
topics within a database on health research
